In Case of an Emergency

If something breaks, you have a sharp wire, are injured in the mouth, or have any other problems, please call our office at (619) 225-1611 and schedule an emergency appointment. We are always available. If it is after office hours and requires immediate attention, you may page us at (858) 684-5929 and leave your number. You can also call Dr. Upatham at (619) 886-8083 or Dr. McLaughlin at (619) 855-1614.

Quite often these problems can be temporarily fixed until the office opens or until your next scheduled appointment. Here is a list of possible issues and what you can do to relieve them until you see us. Also, refer to the “Care Video” located on this site, in the “Emergencies” section.

Cheek and Lip Irritations

During treatment, your gums and cheeks may experience areas of irritation. Rinsing your mouth with a solution of warm salt water can help relieve the irritation and help sores heal. You may also place wax over any sharp or protruding spots such as a bracket or wire. This acts as a cushion and facilitates healing.

Adjustments and Soreness

During treatment your braces will be adjusted every few weeks. After an adjustment, you may experience tooth soreness for about 2 -3 days. If the discomfort is severe, it is recommended to take an over-the-counter pain medication that you would normally use for a headache or other minor pain relief. Additionally, a soft diet is recommended for the first few days after an adjustment appointment.

Loose Bracket

If a bracket comes loose from your tooth but is still attached to the wire, you can place wax over it to help hold it in place until you can come to the office to have it repaired. If the bracket falls off completely, please save the piece if possible and schedule an appointment.

Sharp or Poking Wire

Sometimes a wire comes loose and the end pokes into your cheek or even your gum. If this happens, you can place wax over the sharp area until you come into the office for repair. The best way is to dry the wire and the bracket and then place some wax over it. You may also clip the wire with a clean nail clipper if you are comfortable doing so. Please call and schedule an appointment.
